NYC Body Contouring
Having a dedicated diet and exercise regime is the best way to stay fit and healthy. Despite sticking to this plan, you may experience stubborn fat deposits and excess skin due to sudden weight loss. Regardless of how stubborn your body may seem, body contouring procedures can likely help.
What is Body Contouring?
Body contouring is a set of procedures that can reduce or remove excess skin and unwanted fat pockets to shape different body areas. It is one of the best methods to improve an individual's physical appearance and, thus, boost his or her self-esteem. Nonetheless, it is not a primary weight-loss method and should only be used to complement exercise and other healthy habits. There are both noninvasive (non-surgical) and invasive (surgical) body contouring procedures available.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Body Contouring?
To be considered a suitable candidate for body contouring (otherwise known as “body sculpting”) treatments, you must;
- Be in good health
- Have a stable weight
- Weigh within 5-10 pounds of your ideal weight
Have realistic expectations
To know whether you meet the above requirements, schedule a consultation with Dr. Darren Smith, a top board-certified plastic surgeon in NYC.
Your Initial Consultation with Dr. Darren Smith
Dr. Smith will assess your medical history, previous surgeries, and any medication you may be currently taking. Once the doctor has ascertained that you are a suitable patient for body contouring, you can start planning for the procedure itself. The first step will be taking pre-operative photographs that are crucial for planning your body sculpting procedure. They are included in your medical record and will also be used for before and after comparison.
Dr. Smith will also conduct a physical examination of the body areas you want to have sculpted. He will examine the quality of the skin and the volume of fat deposits in the treatment area. That way, your NYC plastic surgeon will be able to determine the type of sculpting needed.

After this consultation, you may need another appointment with the doctor before the date of your body contouring procedure. During this meeting, the doctor will finalize your plan with you and ask you to prepare for your procedure by following medical recommendations specific to your situation.
Your doctor will also provide you with all the information needed to choose the body contouring technique that best suits you and your goals. There are many types of cosmetic procedures available for New York women and men to improve their physical appearance. Some of these are non-invasive, while others like liposuction and abdominoplasty require surgery.

Body Contouring Procedures in NYC
Non-invasive Body Sculpting Procedures
Emsulpt Neo
Emsculpt Neo is an entirely new generation of noninvasive body contouring procedure. This non-surgical treatment uses the first and only device in the world to combine HIFEM (highly focussed electromagnetic) energy and radio frequency energy to eliminate an average of 30% of the fat in the treatment area and build muscle mass in the treatment area by an average of 25%. The procedure feels like an intense workout but is not painful. There is no downtime, and the procedure is easily performed over a lunch break or before or after work. Emsculpt Neo is FDA cleared to treat the abdomen, buttocks, arms and calves. When used for the buttocks, we usually disable radio frequency energy as fat loss is not desirable in this region. Adverse reactions to Emsculpt Neo are extremely unlikely as the procedure is completely external.
CoolSculpting®
CoolSculpting® is a body sculpting technique that targets and freezes the excess fat that refuses to respond to diet and exercise. Your body naturally breaks down the fat, giving you the sculpted shape that you desire. CoolSculpting, until recently, was the most effective form of noninvasive fat removal according to available data. However, with the introduction of Emsculpt Neo, this no longer seems to be the case as Emsculpt removes 30% of fat on average in the treatment area and CoolSculpting averages 22-23% fat reduction. Emsculpt Neo also has the added benefit of building muscle mass by 25% in the treatment area, while CoolSculpting does not build muscle at all.
CoolSculpting can target stubborn fat deposits in many body areas, including the abdomen, arms, legs and more.. Treatment session length varies depending on the size of the area being treated. While there is a somewhat uncomfortable cooling and tugging sensation immediately after the applicator is turned on, most patients find the post-procedure massage performed to break up the frozen fat to be the most painful part of the procedure.
The procedure is non-surgical, and there is no downtime. Recovery can be uncomfortable as the sensation after treatment is comparable to that of your foot waking up after it was asleep, and can last for several days.
Risks of CoolSculpting include contour abnormalities (dents and divots), skin pigment changes, and paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), which is when fat grows instead of shrinks in response to the procedure.
Invasive body contouring techniques
BodyTite, FaceTite and AccuTite
BodyTite, FaceTite and AccuTite are all minimally invasive procedures designed to tighten the skin. BodyTite uses the largest handpiece and is used on large body areas. FaceTite uses a smaller handpiece and is used on smaller areas like the face and neck. AccuTite uses the smallest handpiece and is used in the smallest, cosmetically sensitive areas such as the eyelids, jowls and midface. This family of devices uses bipolar radiofrequency to heat the skin and dermal layers and thus stimulate collagen production and tissue contraction. The treatments are relatively painless, have minimum downtime.
Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most effective ways to sculpt the body and remove stubborn excess fat. With an advanced background in cutting-edge liposuction technology, board-certified plastic surgeon Darren M. Smith, MD, uses safe and effective techniques to achieve optimal liposuction results. There are several terms used to describe the kind of liposuction procedure that is being performed:
Tumescent technique-
This refers to the injection of numbing fluid into the target areas to make the procedure more comfortable and to limit bruising and blood loss. Almost all liposuction is performed using the tumescent technique.
Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)-
The suction device automatically moves back and forth very rapidly, making the procedure physically easier for the surgeon to perform. With PAL, the surgeon can focus on achieving a wonderful aesthetic result without worrying about struggling to remove large volumes of fat.
Laser-assisted Liposuction-
This technique employs laser energy to target and liquefy excess fat cells and drain them via cannulas. This technique can be used to tighten skin, but Dr. Smith does not find it to be as effective as BodyTite for this purpose.
VASER Liposuction-
This technique uses radiofrequency energy to loosen fatty tissue and provide some skin tightening. We find VASER liposuction useful in cases of male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery) and secondary liposuction as both of these cases involve tough tissue that is difficult to suction without first being treated with energy.

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
This surgical procedure removes excess skin and fat due to pregnancy or significant weight loss. The surgery also tightens the abdominal wall muscles. Patients notice the full results of a tummy tuck after three to six months. There are several kinds of tummy tuck, and Dr. Smith will help you to select the procedure that is best for your needs. Analogous procedures exist to contour the neck, arms and thighs with a combination of muscle tightening, excess skin excision, and liposuction depending on the area in question and degree of change required.
