Mommy Makeover Recovery in NYC
A mommy makeover recovery & planning guide.
Plan your recovery around your operation and your everyday life. Use this guide to organize childcare, help at home, work and follow-up, then confirm the details with Dr. Smith and his team.
From the practice of Darren M. Smith, MD, FACS

01 / YOUR OPERATION, YOUR RECOVERY
Start with the plan.
A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures chosen for you. A tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation and liposuction can involve different instructions. Your recovery plan needs to account for the full operation and your health, as well as your responsibilities at home.
Before choosing a date, talk through the tasks you need to return to: working at a computer, commuting, lifting a child, carrying a stroller, exercising and traveling. Ask for a separate answer for each. A return to desk work does not by itself mean you are cleared for lifting or exercise.
Discuss at consultation
- Which procedures are included, and which part of my plan determines each restriction?
- Would one operation or separate stages be appropriate for my health and goals?
- If my recovery takes longer than expected, what practical support should I have in reserve?
TUMMY TUCK + BREAST SURGERY
Mommy makeover recovery milestones.
For a mommy makeover that combines a tummy tuck with breast surgery, Dr. Smith gives the following typical planning guidance. Your health, procedures and healing determine when you are cleared for each activity. Other combinations may have different instructions.
Remote desk work
Plan for around 1 week before returning to remote work.
Office work
Plan for around 2 weeks before returning to the office. Include your commute when discussing the plan.
Lifting
Do not lift more than 10 lb during the first 2 weeks. Follow your individual instructions after that point.
Lifting a toddler
Arrange help so you can avoid lifting a toddler for 4–6 weeks, with your return to lifting guided by individual clearance.
Light exercise
Light exercise typically resumes around 3 weeks, with clearance for the activities you plan to do.
Full activity
Full activity typically resumes around 6 weeks, with individual clearance from Dr. Smith.
These are typical milestones, not guaranteed recovery dates. A return to work does not mean that lifting or exercise restrictions have ended.
02 / CHILDCARE & HELP AT HOME
Plan for the things you do every day.
Make a list of the moments that usually depend on you. Include getting a child into a crib or car seat, bath time, school pickup, laundry, grocery bags and caring for pets. Review that list with the practice, then assign help for the tasks that fall outside your instructions.
Plan for adult help at home for 3–6 days after tummy tuck plus breast surgery. Organize both a primary helper and a backup, and arrange separate childcare support for tasks that exceed your lifting restrictions. Discuss whether your health, procedures or household needs call for more help.
Children
- Cribs, car seats and bath time
- School or daycare drop-off and pickup
- Meals, bedtime and overnight needs
Your household
- Groceries, laundry and rubbish
- Pet care and deliveries
- Transport to postoperative visits
Your recovery space
- Keep instructions and contact details easy to find
- Ask the team about sleeping position, stairs and bathing
- Check the medication, dressing and garment instructions with your helper
03 / WORK & COMMUTING
Your job matters as much as your calendar.
Tell Dr. Smith what a working day actually involves. Remote computer work, a full day in an office and a job that involves lifting or prolonged standing are different planning questions. Discuss time away, a gradual return if appropriate, and flexibility if your recovery needs more time.
For an office return, include the journey. Subway stairs, a long walk, a crowded train, a heavy work bag or a commute that cannot be shortened may affect your arrangements. Driving typically resumes around 10–14 days after tummy tuck plus breast surgery, with individual clearance. Arrange transport until you are cleared.
Discuss at consultation
- When might I resume focused desk work for my particular operation?
- Does my commute or job require a different return date?
- Which tasks need temporary cover even after I return to work?
04 / ACTIVITY & EVERYDAY CARE
Use your instructions, then build back gradually.
Your postoperative instructions cover incision care, medications, garments and activity. Dressings or drains may be part of your plan. Ask the team to show you and your helper what to do, and confirm when to contact the practice if something is unclear.
Walking, lifting, cardio and abdominal exercise are separate activities to discuss. Keep each within the limits set for your operation, and use follow-up visits to confirm the next step. Ask when bathing, driving, sleeping positions and your usual exercise routine can change.
A guide to one procedure does not replace the instructions for your combined operation.
05 / FOLLOW-UP & TRAVEL
Leave room for care after surgery.
The practice schedules follow-up the next morning, then at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. This is the minimum schedule; additional visits are available as needed or requested.
Dr. Smith leads postoperative care. He and the practice’s physician assistant see postoperative patients together, and he is present for every major visit.
If you are coming from outside New York City for tummy tuck plus breast surgery, plan to stay nearby for 7–10 days before traveling home, subject to individual clearance. Discuss your journey before booking, including flying or a long car ride. Your early visit schedule includes the morning after surgery, 1 week and 2 weeks; confirm with the team how the 2-week visit will be arranged if you expect to leave earlier.

07 / COMMON PLANNING QUESTIONS
Practical questions about mommy makeover recovery.
How much time should I set aside for mommy makeover recovery?
For tummy tuck plus breast surgery, typical planning milestones are remote work around 1 week, office work around 2 weeks, light exercise around 3 weeks and full activity around 6 weeks, with individual clearance. Avoid lifting more than 10 lb for the first 2 weeks and lifting a toddler for 4–6 weeks. Your procedures, health and healing may change these expectations.
Can I look after my children during recovery?
Plan adult help at home for 3–6 days after tummy tuck plus breast surgery, and separate help for childcare tasks that exceed your restrictions. Avoid lifting a toddler for 4–6 weeks, with individual clearance. Tell the practice your children’s ages and daily needs so your support plan covers lifting, car seats, bath time and other physical tasks.
Is it better to combine procedures or have them in stages?
Dr. Smith considers your health, the proposed procedures and the extent of surgery before recommending a combined operation or separate stages. Discuss recovery support and time away from work as part of that decision, alongside the surgical considerations.
Can I use a breast augmentation recovery timeline for my mommy makeover?
Your combined operation has its own recovery instructions. A return-to-work or exercise expectation for breast augmentation alone may not apply when abdominal surgery, a breast lift or other procedures are included. Confirm the plan for your complete operation.
When should I book travel home after surgery?
For tummy tuck plus breast surgery, plan to remain in New York City for 7–10 days before traveling home, with individual clearance. Review flights or long car journeys before booking, and confirm how each follow-up visit—including the 2-week visit—will be arranged.
08 / EXPERIENCE & FURTHER READING
A considered approach to combined surgery.
Dr. Smith co-authored published work on combined breast surgery and abdominoplasty and on reshaping the postpartum patient. Those publications explore planning the operation; your own recovery instructions are tailored to your care.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons also provides general information about postoperative instructions and questions to discuss with your surgeon.
