Customized Treatment Plans

Body Contouring Treatments

The medical aesthetics team offers advanced body contouring treatments to reshape and sculpt the body without surgery. These sessions use focused energy or muscle stimulation to reduce fat and tone the body.

Emsculpt NEO

Emsculpt Neo is an FDA-cleared device, which is not the same as FDA-approved. Cleared means the manufacturer showed it is substantially equivalent to a device already on the market. Its clearances include strengthening and toning the muscle in the treated area.

This non-invasive treatment uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) and radiofrequency (RF) technologies to strengthen muscles and reduce fat.

Sessions last about 30 minutes and treat the abdomen, buttocks, arms or calves. Sessions are spaced a few days apart.

A course is four to six sessions, and how long any change holds depends on weight and continued exercise. Emsculpt Neo is not used in patients with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, neurostimulator or drug pump; where there is metal in the treatment area, including a copper IUD, rods, plates or pins; during pregnancy or breastfeeding, including the postpartum period; in patients with a malignancy, pulmonary insufficiency, epilepsy or a seizure disorder, a severe cardiac disorder, or an active hemorrhagic condition; or where there is an active hernia, a mesh repair, recent surgery, damaged muscle or severe scar tissue in the treatment zone. Emtone (not offered here)

Dr. Smith does not offer Emtone. The practice treats cellulite with Avéli and tightens skin with BodyTite. What the Emtone device is, and what its FDA clearance covers, is set out on the Emtone page.

Cellfina

Dr. Smith does not offer Cellfina. It is a minimally invasive treatment that improves the appearance of cellulite by targeting the underlying cause: fibrous connective tissue bands under the skin.

A small needle-sized device is inserted into the skin and uses a rapidly vibrating surgical blade to precisely cut the tethered bands beneath each dimple.

This subcision releases the fibrous bands, so the skin appears smoother with less dimpling and puckering. Cellulite options available at this practice are discussed at consultation.

Injectables: Neuromodulators and Dermal Fillers

The medical aesthetics team offers a full range of injectable treatments to smooth wrinkles, sculpt facial contours, and plump lips. Clients can choose from a variety of neurotoxins, dermal fillers, and resurfacing treatments to achieve their desired aesthetic.

Neurotoxins: Botox and Jeuveau

Botox and Jeuveau are FDA-approved prescription drugs, not cleared devices. Approved means each went through a full safety and effectiveness review. Both contain a botulinum toxin that blocks the nerve signal reaching the muscle it is injected into, which relaxes that muscle and softens the crease it was making. The practice stocks Botox and Jeuveau. Every botulinum toxin licensed in the United States is available to patients here on request.

The areas treated most often are the crow's feet, the forehead and the frown lines between the eyebrows. The effect of Botox typically lasts 3 to 4 months, after which the muscle recovers and the treatment is repeated. How long it lasts in any individual patient varies.

All botulinum toxin products carry a boxed warning about distant spread of toxin effect. The toxin can act beyond the site it was injected into, and there have been reports of swallowing and breathing difficulty, which can be life-threatening. A toxin is not injected in anyone with a known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation or to any component of the formulation, and it is not injected where there is an infection at the proposed injection site. Patients with a neuromuscular disorder may be at increased risk of serious effects, including respiratory compromise. Dysport carries one additional contraindication of its own: it is not used in anyone allergic to cow's milk protein.

Tell the practice before your first treatment about any neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis or ALS, any previous reaction to a botulinum toxin, any current infection, any medication that affects nerve or muscle function, any allergy to cow's milk protein, and any possibility of pregnancy or breastfeeding. This is not a formality. It decides whether treatment happens, and which product can be used. Bruising, tenderness and headache after injection are common, and a temporary eyelid or brow droop can happen when the toxin affects a nearby muscle. Results vary.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable gel products containing hyaluronic acid that add volume under the skin’s surface to smooth facial creases, plump lips, and contour facial features.

Your clinician provides a range of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane. Your clinician also offers Sculptra, which is not a hyaluronic acid filler. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a collagen stimulator given over a series of treatments, so its effect builds gradually rather than appearing right away.

Laser Skin Resurfacing and Rejuvenation

Your clinician uses advanced laser technology to improve skin tone and texture. Downtime depends on the depth of the treatment and is discussed at consultation.

Resurfacing lasers are FDA-cleared devices, not FDA-approved ones. They remove damaged outer layers of skin in a controlled way and prompt new collagen underneath. Known risks include prolonged redness, crusting during healing, pigment change in either direction, reactivation of cold sores, infection, burns and, rarely, scarring, and the risk of a pigment change is higher in deeper skin tones. Active infection or acne in the treatment area, recent isotretinoin, a tendency to keloid scarring, immunosuppression, recently tanned skin and pregnancy all change whether and how treatment can proceed. Tell the practice about any of these before treatment is planned.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive anti-aging skin treatment that creates tiny channels in the skin to boost collagen production.

This stimulates collagen and elastin to thicken the dermis, reducing the appearance of fine lines, enlarged pores, and acne scars. Your clinician uses sterile microneedle devices and serums, or PRP, during the treatment for enhanced results.

There are two microneedling options available:

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 combines radiofrequency with microneedling to treat the deeper layers of the skin. It is an FDA-cleared device, not an FDA-approved one. Most patients have 3 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with the course planned at consultation. Expect redness, swelling and small pinpoint marks for several days afterward. Possible complications include infection, burns, scarring and changes in skin pigmentation. InMode, which makes the device, sets out contraindications in its operator manual, and the practice works to that list: it covers implanted electrical devices and metal in the treatment area, pregnancy and breastfeeding, cancer history, impaired immunity, bleeding disorders and anticoagulation, keloid scarring, poorly controlled diabetes or thyroid disease, active infection or cold sores in the area, isotretinoin in the past six months, and recent surgery in the area. AquaGold

Microneedling essentially works by inducing controlled micro-injuries in the skin using fine, sterilized needles. This process prompts your skin to naturally boost its collagen and elastin production, which results in firmer skin.

AquaGold uses very fine 24-karat gold-plated needles to deliver a solution into the superficial skin. The practice delivers advanced custom solutions through the device, formulated to each patient’s individual goals rather than to a fixed recipe, and what goes into yours is decided at consultation. Most people describe it as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful, and redness for a few hours afterward is usual. AquaGold is not used over active acne, over an active skin infection such as a cold sore, or over open or broken skin in the treatment area, and it is not used in anyone with a known allergy to a component of the solution being delivered. The practice does not treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell the practice about any cold sore history, any allergy, any keloid scarring, any blood thinner and any possibility of pregnancy before treatment.

AquaGold can treat areas including the delicate skin around the eyes, nose and mouth. Your clinician will discuss whether it is suitable for your goals.

AquaGold results generally appear within three to seven days and typically last about three to four months.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel applies a solution to the skin that removes its outer layers in a controlled way, so that the skin underneath heals in with a smoother texture and a more even tone. Depth is the variable that matters. It decides both how much the skin changes and how long recovery takes.

Peels are grouped as light, medium or deeper. A light peel works on the outermost layer, and recovery is usually a few days of flaking. A medium peel reaches further into the skin and brings visible peeling and redness for longer. A deeper peel produces the most change and needs the most recovery, and it is the one with the most risk attached. Which peel is appropriate, if any, is settled after your clinician examines your skin, rather than chosen from a menu.

The practice uses the VI Peel, TCA peels and the Allergan line. The VI Peel is a branded blended formulation used for tone and texture, and what is in the blend is covered at consultation. TCA, trichloroacetic acid, is used at a range of strengths, and the strength chosen determines both the result and the recovery. The Allergan line is a further range of products the practice uses. Which agent is appropriate, and at what strength, is decided after your clinician examines your skin.

A peel is not performed over an active skin infection, including a cold sore, or over an open wound or broken skin in the treatment area, because the solution would be working on skin that is already compromised. It is not performed in anyone who has reacted badly to a peeling agent before, and it is not performed in anyone currently taking isotretinoin, because isotretinoin changes how skin heals. Tell the practice about any history of cold sores, any previous reaction to a peel, any isotretinoin now or in the recent past, any keloid scarring, any recent sun exposure or tanning, and any possibility of pregnancy before treatment is planned. This is not a formality. It decides which peel can be used, and whether one can be used at all. Redness, tightness and peeling afterward are expected. A peel carries a risk of infection, of scarring and of a lasting change in skin pigment, and results vary from patient to patient.

Pelvic Floor Treatment with Emsella

BTL Emsella is a non-invasive treatment designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

Emsella is FDA-cleared for the treatment of urinary incontinence. Any other use is off-label and is a matter for discussion at consultation.

Using high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM), Emsella stimulates rapid muscle contractions, reinforcing muscle fibers and boosting overall strength.

A course is two sessions a week for three weeks, and you stay fully clothed and seated throughout. Because the field acts on anything conductive in the treatment area, Emsella is not used in patients with a cardiac pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, in patients with metal implants in the pelvis or lower abdomen, in patients with a copper or other metallic IUD in place, or during pregnancy. Tell the practice about any implanted device, any metal hardware below the ribs, any current IUD and any possibility of pregnancy before your first session. It decides whether the treatment happens. Some patients combine Emsella with Emsculpt Neo for core to floor conditioning; that use is off-label and is a matter for discussion at consultation.
