Key takeaways

🔎 Work demands matter.

Dr. Smith discusses a return to a desk job, not unrestricted exercise or physical labor.

🔎 Comfort varies.

He describes soreness that his patients often compared with a strenuous workout, alongside swelling and bruising.

🔎 The appearance changes gradually.

Early swelling can obscure the contour before improvement becomes visible.

🔎 Combined procedures can change aftercare.

He distinguishes liposuction alone from cases involving additional treatments, including BodyTite or VASER, when discussing compression.

Questions this episode answers

When will I see the final result?

In this 2021 recording, Dr. Smith describes noticeable improvement developing after the early swelling period and a final contour that may take three to six months to emerge. Those are examples rather than a guaranteed timetable. Feeling well enough for a desk job does not mean the swelling has finished settling.

How long should I wear compression?

The recording gives Dr. Smith's then-current protocol and explains that additional procedures can change it. Do not use an archival duration as a personal instruction: ask your treating team which garment, schedule, and showering plan apply to your operation.

[00:08] I'm board certified New York City plastic surgeon, Dr. Darren Smith, and this is plastic surgery before and after. Your source for the real deal about plastic surgery procedures, news about trends in aesthetic medicine, and candid sessions with industry insiders. We hope you enjoy today's episode. Hey everybody, it's Dr. Darren Smith. We've been getting a lot of questions lately about liposuction aftercare and recovery. This of course varies a lot by patient and by surgeon. I can tell you that in our practice liposuction recovery is generally pretty comfortable and rapid. Most of our patients, even fairly large liposuction cases, can reasonably expect to get back to a desk job in about 48 hours. You'll definitely have some soreness, some swelling, and some bruising, but this isn't the kind of thing that would keep you from going and doing your job in most cases. So the discomfort, we say, is like something you'll feel after an intense workout, but it does not tend to be any kind of...

[01:14] Intense pain the bruising is almost always gone within about 10 to 14 days in terms of swelling a reasonable expectation is that your swelling will be pretty significant for the first week or so. And then it'll kind of go back to the point where you look like you did before you had liposuction. And then by about two or three weeks, you'll see a nice improvement in your shape. And it does take a good three to six months to see the absolute final results of your procedure. I generally advise my patients after liposuction alone to wear a compression garment for 48 hours straight. and then they can take it off and shower. And then they're really done with compression. If we're doing different forms of skin tightening, either body tight with radio frequency energy or VASER, which uses ultrasound energy, then you're going to be wearing compression for a bit longer. And that's something that we can discuss on a case by case basis. So if you have any other questions about liposuction, aftercare and recovery, please definitely get in touch and we'd be happy to walk you through the whole thing.
