Breast revision surgery is most frequently performed to correct aesthetic or health issues from a prior breast augmentation or breast reconstruction, or to replace implants. The surgery involves surgically accessing the implants, removing them, along with excess scar tissue if needed, and placing new implants, or restoring the breasts to their natural size and shape without implants.

Why would I need breast implant revision surgery?

Many times, patients may want to change or improve the appearance of their breast implants, or address and resolve any discomfort caused by existing implants. They may also be looking to update the implant material. Reasons for the surgery can include a desire to:

  • Improve breast symmetry
  • Perform a breast lift or reduce breast size after implants have been placed
  • Reshape the breast implant pocket to reposition the implant on the chest
  • Change the shape or style of the breast implant
  • Treat the pain or unsightly appearance from capsular contracture
  • Address concern about implant rupture or implant migration
  • To remove textured implants due to health concerns regarding BIA-ALCL

As there are many possible reasons for a breast implant revision surgery, Dr. Smith will sit down with you to discuss your specific concerns and lay out the best possible method to resolve your individual problems with your implants.

Who should get breast implant revision surgery?

A breast implant revision surgery can resolve many issues and concerns. You’re an ideal candidate for the surgery if you meet one or more of the following characteristics:

  • You are unhappy with the size, shape or appearance of your breast implants
  • You are concerned about the integrity or condition of your implants
  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are a nonsmoker

During your breast revision consultation with Dr. Smith, you will go over the health parameters for surgery to decide if you are a suitable candidate for this procedure.

What can I expect during the procedure?

After having a thorough discussion with Dr. Smith about the improvements you’d like to see in your breasts, you are scheduled for surgery at Dr. Smith’s outpatient surgical center or at the hospital depending on patient preference and medical factors.

What are the incisions used in breast revision surgery?

There are multiple types of incisions that Dr. Smith may perform, depending on the type of revision that is being done. These include:

  • Inframammary incision – in the crease under the breast
  • Periareolar incision – incision part way or all the way around an areola
  • Circumvertical incision – around the areola and down the front of the breast

Often, your existing breast surgery scars can be used so there is no additional scarring. The length of time and details of your procedure greatly depend on you’re the changes you envision in the appearance of your breasts, and any complications you are experiencing from your existing implants, such as capsular contracture, rippling, or other aesthetic or medical problems. Dr. Smith can go over your procedure in detail during your consultation prior to the surgery.

How long is the recovery?

Your recovery will probably be similar to what you experienced after your initial breast surgery, but with less discomfort as in general, less pocket manipulation is required. You will likely experience mild discomfort, along with some swelling and bruising. You can take medication to ease the pain. You should take it easy for the first two weeks and then start to resume your regular activities after two to four weeks.

Dr. Smith will review your recovery plan with you in detail based on the procedure that is performed. While you will see a major change right away after surgery, it may take several months to see the final result and shape of your new implants once all of your swelling resolves.
